Images and Artist Statement by Sophia Thompson

This piece was originally published in ‘Pleasure and Danger’, Bossy’s 2020 print edition.

This is a hand-built work created for my portfolio. Unfired and unglazed, it is raw and open to the elements. Using a repetitive coil technique, this work is a meditative manifestation of quiet stillness and continuous growth – reflective of the times and sentiments we are facing currently.

I began working with ceramics when I came to uni and subsequently made it my major in my visual arts degree. I love the slow and involved process of creation and the connection to physicality and mind. I am inspired by bright and bold ceramic pieces with an emphasis on organic form and symbolism. One thing I adore about ceramics is the element of continuous experimentation and the unknown.
