We are thrilled to announce this year’s print theme is Metamorphosis:
- a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one.
- Scientific Definition: the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Synonyms: Transformation, transfiguration, change, alteration, variation, conversion, remodelling, and reconstruction.
Metamorphosis is derived from the Greek metamorphoun, which means transforming or changing shape. While this word can be described scientifically to suggest physical and structural changes made to an organism, enabling it to adapt to other environments, it is also a broader suggestion of adaptation. It describes how a caterpillar can change and adapt to eventually form a butterfly – a suitable metaphor to indicate the transformation we make every day as people. People and humans can grow and evolve which makes us who we are. We can adapt to any situation and environment by reshaping ourselves, and transformation is a necessary process that we go through as we grow and develop. This theme will encourage the community to delve deeper into self-discovery and examine how we each have changed and evolved as people, the motivations for this, and what it says about us on the journey we take through our lives.
This issue of Bossy aims to uncover deep reflection about the past, present and future. It will encourage the community to contribute significant pieces and artwork that show transformation, highlighting that the process of metamorphosis is not simple or without imperfections but one that involves acceptance and perseverance to become the butterfly that you are and can be. For this edition, we also seek to reflect on how Bossy as a publication has evolved. As it is our tenth edition, we want to explore how Bossy has helped people in our ANU community transform over time and become the successful organisation we are today. We also want to examine the phenomenon of life cycle and identity and how people change from when they are born to when they take their last breaths. Think about who you were at age five and how that person is different from who you are today. Think about how the world and society have changed and how this university has transformed.
Change and adaptation have allowed our society today to progress. However, we can become stagnant in our fight for justice, acceptance and diversity when looking at what has been done rather than what still needs to be done. So, while this theme allows us to reflect on the positive transformations we have observed as people, it is not time for us to become stagnant. We have so much left to transform, which we can see reflecting on the global climate crisis, the continued violence against women*, hatred towards the LGBTQI+ community and the inequalities faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.
We want this issue to encourage and spark change by reflecting on what once was, what is and what can be. This issue is for you to share your journey to transformation – are you satisfied and proud of it? What is still left for you to change, adapt and evolve?
